The 25 PFAS-based poster presentations at the Glasgow 2026 IWA Congress indicate the extent of current research in the area. Work was predominantly based on the removal step, mainly by adsorption, with downstream oxidative destruction also studied.

Membrane recycling may reduce emissions through reducing the amount of spent membrane modules for end disposal, but there are likely to be further emissions involved in the membrane reprocessing step. Extending membrane life is probably more beneficial.

Research at pilot scale has demonstrated that oscillating an immersed membrane is more energy efficient than conventional membrane air scouring for sustaining membrane permeability in an MBR. However, there are other less onerous practical alternatives.
