WEFTEC 2018 Exhibition: The MBR Site report
The MBR Site visited the Water Environment Federation (WEFTEC) 2018 Technical Exhibition in New Orleans, USA from 29 September−3 October.
The conference is staged at Chicago and New Orleans on alternate years. This year featured a small number of MBR presentations scattered within the conference technical programme, including a session on membrane aeration biofilm reactors (MABRs), and a significant number of MBR stakeholders with booths at the exhibition.
Companies present included polymeric flat sheet (FS) MBR membrane suppliers, with many of the providers (Alfa Laval, Fibracast, Kubota, Martin, Microdyn-Nadir, Ovivo, newterra, and Toray) offering composite membrane products and some (e.g. Sinap) offering exclusively rigid flat plate products. A number of suppliers of ceramic FS products, including ItN and Meiden - as well as Ovivo - also had booths. The Meiden technology is employed by Siemens (also present) in their PACT MBR, in which powdered activated carbon is dosed at high concentrations in the mixed liquor, targeted at petroleum industry effluents.
Immersed hollow fibre (HF) MBR membrane suppliers present at the exhibition included Evoqua, Koch, Membrane Solutions, Mitsubishi Chemical Aqua Solutions and Suez, all offering polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF)-based products. These fibres are predominantly reinforced, and three of the membrane module products are fitted with integrated coarse-bubble aerators.
There were also a few companies offering containerised immersed MBR plants, including H2O Innovation and Smith & Loveless - the latter perhaps better known for their degritter technology. We saw one example of an MABR, offered by Fluence.
All in all, the networking opportunities of WEFTEC 2018 were outstanding, and we were privileged to meet both old friends and new. It's always an education.
Below are some of the MBR technology suppliers we had the pleasure to meet from around the Exhibition.
Many thanks to all.
