Koch Membrane Systems selected to supply Puron® MBR technology for the Woolston Wastewater Treatment Works redevelopment project

Koch Membrane Systems has announced that it has been selected to provide its PURON® MBR modules for the upgrade and expansion of the Woolston Wastewater Treatment Works near Southampton, Hampshire, UK. The plant is owned and operated by Southern Water.

Southern Water needed to upgrade the Woolston WWTW to ensure treated wastewater meets new, higher environmental standards, and to increase the capacity of the current asset to accommodate higher demand resulting from the redevelopment of the area. After selecting a membrane bioreactor as part of the technical solution best suited to satisfy the project requirements, 4Delivery Limited a consortium comprising Veolia, Costain and MWH which has carried out a range of environmental improvement schemes on behalf of Southern Water issued a public tender to ensure they received the most competitive and technically advanced solution available.

KMS collaborated with both 4Delivery Limited and Southern Water to deliver comprehensive technical support, providing them with the confidence that KMS, with its innovative single-header PURON® MBR technology, was the best solution for the project. The PURON® reinforced hollow fibre MBR technology was selected due to its proven history of excellent and energy-efficient service in similar wastewater treatment plants.

When started up in Summer 2017, the plant will treat wastewater at an average flow of 19,000 cubic meters per day, with the ability to process a maximum daily capacity of 39,000 cubic meters. At this size, the Woolston MBR plant will be the largest MBR facility in the United Kingdom.
