Hungarian city upgrades wastewater treatment plant with GE advanced technology to meet new environmental regulations

The city of Veresegyház has selected GE's ZeeWeed 500D ultrafiltration membrane bioreactor technology to increase water reuse at its existing water treatment plant. Upcoming regulations governing water reuse prompted the upgrade, which will purify water used for irrigation, a recreational pond and industrial reuse.

Veresegyház, a suburb of the Hungarian capital city of Budapest, is known for its recreational lakes and parks but has been experiencing a freshwater shortage in recent years. In 2010, the water authority issued a permit that allowed the municipality to reuse the water treated by GE's MBR technology. This helps ensure the region has increased access to fresh water.

Under the contract, GE will supply the city of Veresegyház with MBR technology and equipment featuring ZeeWeed 500D reinforced, hollow-fibre membranes. Nearly 1,000 plants worldwide use this technology to produce superior quality drinking water and to meet or exceed stringent wastewater treatment and water reuse standards.

The upgrade of the plant's wastewater treatment processes features four ZeeWeed 500D trains, eight cassettes and 288 modules. This will expand the plant's treatment capacity to 5,000 cubic metres per day (m3/day). The project is financed by the EU Cohesion Fund and is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

GE's Manufacturing Center of Excellence 10th anniversary

GE has also marked the 10th anniversary of the GE Water and Process Technologies' Global Manufacturing Center of Excellence in Oroszlány, Hungary, a state-of-the-art facility for MBR water treatment technology and the world’s largest ultrafiltration/MBR module manufacturing site in the industry.

Since 2002, it has increased its production capacity tenfold to serve municipalities and industry throughout Europe. The technology installed in Veresegyház was manufactured at the Oroszlány Center of Excellence.
