Channel clogging in membrane bioreactors
|
Clogging is where a thick deposit fills the space within an MBR module channel (also known as ‘sludging’ or ‘localised dewatering’). Sometimes long rags or braids can develop in the tank which wrap around the membrane tank infrastructure (‘ragging’ or ‘braiding’).
Chemical cleans only attack the foulants on the membrane surface, without removing the clogged material filling the membrane channels. Cranfield University and Qatar University have been researching this area to see what can be done.

Going forward with osmosis
Wastewater treatment offers a few elegant examples of the useful combination of two unit processes. This includes the MLE (Modified Ludzak Ettinger) process for nutrient removal, as well as combined screening and degritting for protecting downstream processes from rags and abrasive particles. But it also appears that this extends to reducing energy consumption using the new-ish technology of forward osmosis – heralded as the future of desalination.
